Great Ormond Street Hospital

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is an international centre of excellence in child healthcare. Together with their research partner, UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, they form the UK’s only academic Biomedical Research Centre specialising in paediatrics.

Since its formation in 1852, the hospital has been dedicated to children’s healthcare and to finding new and better ways to treat childhood illnesses. Great Ormond Street Hospital receives more than 268,000 patient visits every year. Most of the children we care for are referred from other hospitals throughout the UK and overseas. There are 58 different clinical specialties at GOSH; the UK’s widest range of specialist health services for children on one site.

The Challenge

Integrella initially worked with GOSH when they assisted in the development of interfaces for their Ensemble Trust Integration Engine (TIE). At the time, GOSH had an internal contractor who were managing the service. The problem was that the support service was proving to be expensive, and wasn’t meeting requirements – as response times were not linked to SLA’s. This meant that there was greater potential for downtime of systems, and therefore higher risk to patients.

The Trust had developed a strong relationship since Integrella’s past projects with them, so they invited Integrella to respond to a tender for providing integration support services for their InterSystems Ensemble environment.

Having done many projects within NHS Trusts, Integrella has a good understanding of NHS requirements, so was in a good position to respond. We provided GOSH with a compelling proposal to provide then with our 24/7 Long Term Support (LTS) service with the added benefit of our iSentry proactive monitoring tool.

Integrella’s NHS and public sector experience was an important factor in the Trust’s decision to award the support contract to Integrella.

The Solution

As with all NHS trusts – managing costs and achieving greater operational efficiency by leveraging technology is a key strategic driver, and these are some of the main benefits Integrella wanted to bring to the Trust.

As part of the contract Integrella provides support to the integration manager to improve downtime, reduce costs and provide fixes for inherent issues, as well as cost effective options for any associated or complementary integration work.

This helps the Trust manage costs more effectively and provide more accurate business cases for approval. The Trust has the assurance that they are working with a partner who knows their environments, and can help if any unexpected needs arise.

We are also undertaking to upgrade their existing InterSystems Ensemble environment to InterSystems HealthShare Health Connect and connecting the hospital systems with the NHS Spine for Child Protection Information Sharing.
